The winemaker

Winemaker Country Region
Weingut Josef Michel Germany Baden
About the winemaker Since 1983, Josef Michel has had his winery on the outskirts of Vogtsburg. The total vineyard area measures 13 hectares and is concentrated around Achkarren in the heart of the best part of the Baden wine region. The top vineyard Schlossberg is the basis of many extraordinary wines. With a short pruning method, selective manual harvesting and a guided fermentation, the potential of the vineyard is fully exploited. Michel is the leading producer on the Achkarrer Schlossberg. With his search for finesse, elegance and typicity, he has succeeded in raising his wines to an exceptionally high level in recent years. According to wine critics, his grauburgunder wines are among the best in Germany and his three-star wines are among the absolute top of Baden. Red is young and elegant and beautifully expresses the volcanic terroir that characterizes the soil in this part of Baden. Weingut J. Michel is a member of the VDP.

Vineyard

The SCHLOSSBERG is located north of Achkarren and reaches more than 350 m above sea level. The name goes back to Höhingen Castle, built in the 13th century, whose weathered ruins can still be found found on the summit today. The ground is stony because the vines are also rooted in the dark tephrite here. The work in the up to 60 percent steep slopes is intensive and demanding. The curved shape of the mountain creates a specific microclimate, typical of this terroir.

Vinification

At the beginning of September, the grapes are picked by hand and strictly sorted. The traditional skin maceration takes place in open stainless steel tanks for 20 days. After pressing, the wine matures for 12 months in French oak barrels (228 l), 60% of the casks were new and% percent were in their second use. The bottling took place without filtration.
