German wines

In wine terms, people often speak about new world and old world wine countries. Germany is one of the old world wine countries, together with France and Italy, and belongs to the top three in that category. The most important grape has always been Riesling. In recent years, Germany has seen a great change led by a new generation of German winemakers. The northern location with its cool climate, the terraced vineyards in sometimes deep river valleys are the ideal conditions for making beautiful, clean dry wines. The Frey brothers in Rheinhessen and Josef Michel in Baden produce wines that excel in finesse and typicity. Wines made from the Riesling grape, but also Silvaner, Grauer Burgunder, Weissburgunder and Spätburgunder. The Weis family runs the Erben von Beulwitz winery in the Moselle and the wines from the Kaseler Ring are perfect examples of how Riesling can excel on its unique terroir.
