Josef Michel

Josef Michel succeeded his parents in 1983 at this estate in Vogtsburg, the heart of the Kaiserstuhl. From that moment on, Josef's talents made the domaine's star rise and today Weingut Michel is counted among the top of the German wine region Baden. Today, Josef is assisted by his son Robin and with this the 3rd generation has entered the domain. Weingut Michel has the vineyards mainly around Vogtsburg and the most important "Lage" is the Achkarrer Schlossberg. A striking mountain formed in the ice age with a great terroir. In the vineyards you can find mainly "Burgunder-rebons". Grauburgunder as signature and also Chardonnay Spätburgunder and Weissburgunder. The remarkable thing is that Josef has more than 80 different plots on the Achkarrer Schlossberg. Josef works organically in the vineyards. He uses absolutely no pesticides or herbicides, copper sulphate against mildew and further he wants to let nature make his wines. He applies the same principle in the cellar. By "controlled inaction" Josef's wines are created. The white wines undergo cold stabilization and clarification by sedimentation. The white wines undergo fermentation on stainless steel and for the higher cuvées large wooden casks are used. The reds are aged in barriques. Website: www.weingutmichel.com

Josef Michel

Josef Michel is one of the calmest winemakers we know. You will seldom catch him going overboard and he lets everything happen quietly. For years Gerhard Eichelmann shouted that it was incomprehensible that Josef was not a member of the VDP, Josef then reacted with a shrug and waited quietly. When he was asked to join, he did not shout it from the rooftops either. Also in the vineyards and the cellar you won't find him introducing many innovations. He works very classically, in both his 80(!) different vineyards, and in the cellar. If there is something new in the field of vinification he will not shy away from it.
