The Burgundy wine region begins south of the city of Dijon and runs all the way down to Lyon. The white Burgundy wines are known for the unique expression of the Chardonnay grape and nowhere in the world are more beautiful wines made from this grape. The red wines are made from the pinot noir grape and the Grand Crus from the Côte de Nuits and village wines from the Côte de Beaune make the heart of many wine lovers beat faster. Lalou Bize-Leroy

Lalou Bize-Leroy is arguably the best winemaker in Burgundy. Her wines reach an unprecedented size and she is now the example for the youngest generation of winemakers. At Domaine d'Auvenay, the doctrine of biodynamics is very strictly observed. Since no chemical pesticides and insecticides are used, the vineyards are used by horse and carriage. The soil is plowed to get more oxygen into the soil. This forces the plants to grow their rootstocks further into the ground and to look for minerals here. The vine is in complete harmony with its environment. Lalou Bize-Leroy compares a vineyard to a village. To form a vibrant village community, you need many different characters and talents, she says. A winemaker with a very strong personality and philosophy. The wines from her hand are seen as the most beautiful from Burgundy.

Burgundy Wines

In fact, the Burgundy wine region consists of six different areas. The most northerly is Chablis where only white wines are made on the unique chalk soils. The Côte de Nuits can be found between Dijon and Beaune, a sub-region where mainly red wines are made. Here you can find Grand Crus such as Vlos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Mazis-Chambertin. Between Beaune and Chalon-sur-Saone lies the Côte de Beaune. A region where both white and red are made, but the white wines from villages such as Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet have almost reached cult status. Chalonnais begins south of Chassagne-Montrachet, an area with villages such as Rully and Mercurey. Here wines are made with a wonderful price-quality ratio. The most famous white wines from the south in Burgundy, the Maconnais, bear names such as Pouilly-Fuissé, Saint-Véran and Mâcon. A little further south is the Beaujolais, also part of Burgundy. No pinot noir here, but gamay for the red wines
