Quinta do Lagar Novo

Luis Gonçalves de Carvalho

In 1742, Quinta do Lagar Novo was built on the foundations of the old house of Lagar de Fuso e Vara, in the countryside of Alenquer, approximately 35 km from Lisbon. The farm then was acquired by the Gonçalves de Carvalho family and is currently owned by the second and third generations. This small family estate, with a history of more than 200 years of grape and wine production, has approximately 5 hectares of vineyards.
Under the guidance of owner Luís Elias Gonçalves de Carvalho, the vineyards were completely renovated using the very best and most recent wine-growing techniques. The vineyards are farmed sustainably and are located in a slightly sloping plain on soil rich in clay and limestone which has a very open texture. The microclimate is moderate. The warmth is tempered by the maritime influence of the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. This mild climate contributes to excellent and even ripening of the grapes and allows João to harvest relatively early.

Wine from Portugal

Port is the first thing most people think of when they think of Portugal. But of course there is much more wine to be had from this country that is still rich in indigenous grapes. Where wine countries planted the popular and often originally French grapes, the Portuguese stuck to their native grapes and flavors. Wine has been grown in Portugal for 4,000 years. Portugal borders Spain to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The main cities are Lisbon and Porto. In Lisbon the Tagus (Tejo) flows into the Atlantic Ocean and Porto de Douro. Some of the most important Portuguese wine regions are also located along these rivers. The most important wine regions are Minho, where Vinho Verde comes from, Douro, the cradle of Port wine, Dão, Alentejo, Algarve and the Lisbon region.
