Brookdale Wine Estate South Africa Paarl
About the winemaker Brookdale is the estate of Tim Rudd. This Englishman has fallen for the land, the wines and the wine regions of South Africa. In Paarl, he found the estate that he thought had a great future. Tim surrounded himself with the best South African specialists he could find. Duncan Savage as consultant winemaker and Jaco Engelbrecht as viticulturist. Together they decided to go for field-blends with white and red Rhone varieties and of course chenin blanc. Especially the older vineyards, which were already planted with chenin blanc show, that the soil which is rich in granite, clay, quartz and schist is extremely suitable for this grape variety. As of 2019, Kiara Scott is responsible for the vinification for all wines at Brookdale Estate.

Vineyard

The Mason Road syrah comes from young vineyards (approximately 15 years old) around Brookdale Estate. The estate is located near Klein Drakenstein in Paarl, a long-established wine region with a long history.

Vinification The grapes are manually harvested separately at varying stages. Grenache and Syrah were whole-bunch fermented while Cinsault and Petit Syrah were crushed and destemmed. Each batch was fermented separately in open top fermenters with wild/natural yeast. Gentle extraction and pressing. Malolactic fermentation and 8 months maturation in French oak barrels (300 and 500l.)
