Brookdale Bradbourne 2022

Clean aromas of Asian pear, white honey, blossom and crushed chalk. Textured and detailed, the palate has a floaty feel, like club soda. Young quince, apples and melon abound, curving along a line of salted butterscotch to a deeper shade of waxy honeycomb. On the mid-palate the sensation of peaches and cream is run through with a lifted, lemony acidity as the wine crests into a citrus-toned finish.

About the winemaker Brookdale is the estate of Tim Rudd. This Englishman has fallen for the land, the wines and the wine regions of South Africa. In Paarl, he found the estate that he thought had a great future. Tim surrounded himself with the best South African specialists he could find. Duncan Savage as consultant winemaker and Jaco Engelbrecht as viticulturist. Together they decided to go for field-blends with white and red Rhone varieties and of course chenin blanc. Especially the older vineyards, which were already planted with chenin blanc show, that the soil which is rich in granite, clay, quartz and schist is extremely suitable for this grape variety. As of 2019, Kiara Scott is responsible for the vinification for all wines at Brookdale Estate.

Details

Vineyard The Brookdale Bradbourne comes from 4 different vineyards planted in 2019. The vineyards are planted in differents ways, bushvines, trellised and "en echalas". Brookdale Estate can be found near Klein Drakenstein in Paarl, a long existing wine region with a great history.
Vinification A blend of Grenache Blanc, Piquepoul Blanc, Roussanne and Marsanne. The grapes were picked at different stages. The fruit was pre-cooled and whole bunch pressed before spontaneous fermentation took place. The wine was barrel fermented and aged in old 500L French oak barrels. A portion of the Grenache was whole bunch fermented for added texture and complexity. The components went through 80% malolactic fermentation. The wines were aged for 1 year in barrel prior blending and bottling and spent six months in bottle before release.
