Romain Collet

Henri Costal actually emerged from a tasting with three different winemakers: winemaker Romain Collet of Domaine Jean Collet, well-known American wine importer Kermit Lynch and vintner Bernard Raveneau. The discussion during the tasting led to a collaboration between Collet and Kermit Lynch and the wines under the name Henri Costal. Romain Collet is responsible for the vinification of the wines Romain Collet has access to 28 hectares of vineyards in four different premier cru's and two different grand cru's. As of the 2015 harvest, the wines from the premier cru and grand cru vineyards are certified, according to the rules of organic viticulture. All the vineyards are worked according to these rules and the planting density varies from 5500 to 6000 vines per hectare. Only natural means are used to improve the soil.

Romain Collet

At the age of 21, Romain came to work on the family estate alongside his father Gilles. He immediately came up with innovative ideas like natural fermentation, biodynamic approach and that made his father decide to leave. Since 2008 Romain is solely responsible and he enjoys what his grandfather and father left him. These are the old vineyards planted by the generations before him. Romain works organically on all his vineyards and a part of them is already certified. Each wine is vinified according to the terroir and thus the wines are all unique.

Burgundy Wines

In fact, the Burgundy wine region consists of six different areas. The most northerly is Chablis where only white wines are made on the unique chalk soils. The Côte de Nuits can be found between Dijon and Beaune, a sub-region where mainly red wines are made. Here you can find Grand Crus such as Vlos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Mazis-Chambertin. Between Beaune and Chalon-sur-Saone lies the Côte de Beaune. A region where both white and red are made, but the white wines from villages such as Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet have almost reached cult status. Chalonnais begins south of Chassagne-Montrachet, an area with villages such as Rully and Mercurey. Here wines are made with a wonderful price-quality ratio. The most famous white wines from the south in Burgundy, the Maconnais, bear names such as Pouilly-Fuissé, Saint-Véran and Mâcon. A little further south is the Beaujolais, also part of Burgundy. No pinot noir here, but gamay for the red wines
