About the winemaker
Eben Sadie is counted among the pioneers in South African viticulture. Because of his insight it can be said, that the Swartland region came in a completely different light. It was Eben, who found the older vineyards here and made his famous Columella and Palladius. In 2012 he started a series of wines, also called the Ouwingerd series. A series of wines from vineyards with very old vines and the wines made from them are stunning. Through low yields and the craftsmanship of Eben Sadie, a new series of top wines from the Cape is born.
Details
| Vineyard | At the base here is a 60-year-old vineyard located near the coast. The 2.4 hectare vineyard is planted with palomino and chenin blanc and these grapes make up the wine. The soil of the vineyard consists mainly of limestone and the deeper layers consist of pure lime. |
|---|---|
| Vinification | Grapes are pressed collectively after harvest and vinified in old wooden barrels. Thanks to the beautiful terroir, the characteristics of this wine are its freshness and minerality. After the harvest, the grapes are first cooled down before the pressing begins. Fermentation starts slowly and can last up to 6 months. Just before bottling, there is a minute addition of sulfite. The wine is neither clarified nor filtered and is best decanted before drinking. Yield was 28 hl/ha. |
