About the winemaker
Brookdale is the estate of Tim Rudd. This Englishman has fallen for the land, the wines and the wine regions of South Africa. In Paarl, he found the estate that he thought had a great future. Tim surrounded himself with the best South African specialists he could find. Duncan Savage as consultant winemaker and Jaco Engelbrecht as viticulturist. Together they decided to go for field-blends with white and red Rhone varieties and of course chenin blanc. Especially the older vineyards, which were already planted with chenin blanc show, that the soil which is rich in granite, clay, quartz and schist is extremely suitable for this grape variety. As of 2019, Kiara Scott is responsible for the vinification for all wines at Brookdale Estate.

| Vinification | For the Chenin Blanc, after the harvest, the grapes are left unstemmed and gently pressed. After a light pressing, fermentation starts by natural yeasts in 500-liter French oak barrels (25% new). After about 10 months, the wines are blended to the final composition and the wine remains in the bottle for another 9 months. For the red wines: The grapes are harvested manually and in phases. Separate fermentation in open tanks, with whole bunches of Grenache and Syrah and Cinsault and Petit Syrah destemmed. Gentle extraction and pressing. Malolactic fermentation and aging for 8 months in French oak barrels (300 and 500l.) |
