Tim Atkin Rioja Report - Pujanza wederom "First Growth"

  • 2018 Pujanza Norte 97/100: The vines are still comparatively young at 19 years' old, but Norte, located at 730 metres on the slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria, is one of Rioja's greatest parcels. Influenced by the presence of limestone close to the surface, this is a thrilling Tempranillo that's taut, chalky and chiselled with serious, ageworthy tannins, sappy acidity and layers of red berry and black cherry fruit. 2025-35
  • 2018 Pujanza la Paul 96/100: La Paul is a 1.8-hectare vineyard that was planted in two stages - 70 and 90 years ago, respectively. Stony, sloping and located at 610 metres, it's a wonderful site that "I understand more each year", according to Carlos San Pedro. Aged in 20% new wood, this is inky, serious and profound, with cassis and blackberry fruit, sinewy tannins and thrilling freshness. 2023-35
  • 2017 Pujanza Valdepoleo 95/100: Made entirely from Tempranillo grown around the winery at an average altitude of 630 metres, covering seven different sub-parcels and soil types, this is one of the larger cuvées in the Pujanza range. Aged in 25% new wood, it's subtle, chalky and scented, expressing the cool elegance of the 2018 vintage in the bottle. Long and refreshing. 2022-30
  • 2017 Pujanza Hado 93/100: Hado combines Tempranillo parcels in Laguardia between 580 and 700 metres and is a comparative bargain in the Pujanza range. Exhibiting the freshness of an Atlantic year, it's typical of winemaker Carlos San Pedro's style, with tangy, chalky freshness, fine tannins, plenty of supporting acidity and graceful red cherry and raspberry fruit embellished by perfumed oak. 2021-26
  • 2018 Pujanza Anteportalatina 96/100: Always up there with my favourite whites in Rioja, this is a pure Viura from a site at 600 metres, which also produces Pujanza's Añadas Frías, though never in the same year. Bready, salty and concentrated, with subtle wood, pithy, acidity, textured pear and citrus flavours and a lingering finish. 2021-28
  • 2019 Pujanza Añadas Frías 96/100: Released under the "añadas frías" (cool years) label, despite the fact that 2019 was a warm vintage, this stunning, almost Chablis Grand Cru-like Viura comes from a very lowyielding, 1.5-hectare parcel at 600 metres. Saline, taut and grapefruity, it has subtle oak and undertones of lemongrass and refined oak. 2022-27
